NLC demands N794,000 as minimum wage for workers in South West

Culled from allcitynews.ng Nigeria Labour Congress (NLC) Lagos State Council has presented a demand of N794,000 for workers in the South West geopolitical political zone. The Lagos State Chairman, Comrade Funmi Sessi made this known while addressing stakeholders in Lagos on Thursday. According to her, NLC workers are not slaves, they should be given living wage and not just minimum wage based on the current economic realities. Addressing the gathering during the Tripartite National Minimum Wage Committee, comprising representatives of the federal government, state governments, private sector, and organised labour, which took place at LTV 8, Ikeja, Lagos, Nigeria, on Thursday 7 March 2024, Sessi emphasised that Nigerian workers should not be seen or treated like slaves with peanuts salary following the economic realities. She reiterated the call by NLC Labour for a new national minimum wage of N794,000 because Nigerian workers should earn decent living. As she submitted memorandum submitted at the South-West, Geo-Political Zone, Public Hearings, organised by the Tripartite Committee on National Minimum Wage (TCNMW), chaired by the Minister of Finance, and Coordinating Minister for Economy, Mr. Wale Edun, held in LTV Ground, Agindingbi, Ikeja, Lagos, she stressed that the call for the review has become expedient in view of the rising cost of living across economic sectors, hence the need for an upward review of the minimum wage for Nigerian workers that is sustainable. The union condemned the attitude of some state governments over the welfare of workers under their payroll, noting that stance of some governors’ inability to pay the minimum wage as “unacceptable.” It would be recalled that federal government set up committee on National Minimum Wage Committee were made to hold today simultaneously in the six geo-political zones across the country. The Tripartite National Minimum Wage Committee, comprising representatives of the federal government, state governments, private sector, and organised labour, will begin deliberations on Thursday on the new minimum wage for Nigerian workers. The committee, which was inaugurated by President Bola Tinubu on January 30, 2024, is expected to submit its recommendations to the National Assembly as an executive bill before the expiration of the current N30,000 minimum wage in March 2024. The commencement of the negotiations came amid a strike notice issued by the Nigeria Labour Congress (NLC) and the Trade Union Congress (TUC) over the alleged poor implementation of the fuel subsidy removal palliatives, including the payment of N35,000 wage award. The Federal Government, however, pleaded with NLC and civil societies who always join NLC for protest to withdraw the protest and promised to resume the payment of the wage award last week. Findings by allcitynews.ng showed NLC is not asking for too much with demand for the Minimum Wage. Worrisome is that most state Governors who feign handicaps of funds in payment of National Minimum Wage are out with buying latest jeeps for lawmakers at the detriment of taking care of welfare of their workers.
